2. Originally established by the San Francisco School Board as the Chinese Primary School in response to Tape v. Hurley (see pp. 171-75), the school became Oriental Public School in 1906 to accommodate Japanese and Korean students. Under pressure from the Chinese American Citizens Alliance, which found "Oriental" offensive, the board changed the name to Commodore Stockton Elementary School in 19214. More recently, in October 1998 the school board decided to rename the school Gordon J. Lau Elementary School in honor of the first Chinese American elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, in 1977
